WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

When it comes to energy efficiency and the environment, Monier Bricks and Roofing offers a
lifetime of benefits.

One could be fooled into thinking this is the domain of modern materials and building products.
Yet ironically, it’s the tried and trusted clay brick and concrete roof tile that stacks up against
the essential criteria for homes that are being built today, with an eye to the future.

Thermal Mass refers to the ability of a material to retain heat. For example, a heated stone
will remain warmer for longer than a piece of wood. This is because the stone is denser and therefore contains more mass. Monier Bricks and Roofing provide thermal mass – we’re the
“heavy-weights” of building products and this is extremely important. Density provides
thermal mass which is a key component of passive solar design.

Passive design is a proven method of keeping your home at comfortable temperatures all year
round and reducing the need for heating and cooling methods, thus reducing electricity loads
and your costs.

PRINCIPLES OF PASSIVE SOLAR DESIGN

Over the lifetime of a home, the energy consumed in the manufacture of materials counts fo
r only 5%. The other 95% is the ongoing running of the home, of which a significant portion is heating and cooling. The less of this required, the less direct impact on the environment. Because of their thermal mass, our bricks and roofing tiles help reduce the energy you need to use in your home to keep it comfortable.

Bricks and roof tiles come from the earth, and being made of clay are 100% safe. They are inert, have no volatile organic compounds and allow your home to breathe, creating a healthy environment for you and your family.
